Turf Corner by Marlon Gieseler Fall 2009
As the season changes from GREAT golf to beautiful fall colours & cooler temperatures so changes the list of jobs to assure the course remains #1 for the opening of the 2010 Season. We purchased a new rotary mower to mulch leaves and go tight around trees. Some drainage, irrigation upgrades and tree removal will be done this fall. Also, Gary Marchment is moving to Pembroke. He cut tees & aprons for the past 6 years. We wish him success in his future endeavours. Enjoy the Fall Golfing & I look forward to seeing you in early Spring 2010. Marlon Gieseler Golf Course Superintendent Turf Corner by Marlon Gieseler With the wet weather last fall not a lot of projects were attempted. We did cut some dangerous trees down as well as dig up some wet areas and replaced native soils with a sand mix. Hopefully we will have better weather this year. I have plans for more projects this coming fall. At the time of writing this I've only been able to look at a couple of greens to see how they wintered and they look fine. I will be able to walk the course soon and get a better look at everything. Some early reports around Ontario indicate that there was some turf loss at some golf courses. From what we can see things look pretty good at Brooklea so far. All grounds crew members from last year are returning which is always great news. I would like to replace one of the machines we use to cut around trees and mulch leaves. With any luck we will get off to a good start to the season which would help make this possible. Welcome back to another great year of golf. A new garden was built near # 16 tee in order to beautify this area. The plan is to enlarge this garden next year to rectify thin pot holes in this vicinity. Have a great fall, golfing. Yours Truly, Marlon Gieseler Golf Course Superintendent Marlon's Fall Humour! A recent study found an average American golfer walks about 900 miles in a Year. Another study found American golfers drink (on average) 22 gallons of beer in a Year. That means on average: American golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kinda Makes You Proud! The golf season was obviously a wet one. Water requirements for the course were the lowest in years. The property stayed in good shape throughout the season. The following projects will be done this fall: Aerifying, verti-cutting, filling bunkers with sand, drainage and cutting trees down should be completed with minimal disturbance to your golf enjoyment. A 300 gallon sprayer was purchased in July making the spraying of fairways more accurate and fast. It has a computer on board that regulates the proper rate more accurately. All front or back Fairways can be sprayed in 2 Hours & 30 minutes. Turf CornerBy Marlon Gieseler By Marlon Gieseler March 2007 Welcome back! I am certainly looking forward to a great year! The projects completed last fall were limited due to the wettest fall in years. However, two bridges were built: the bridge closest to # 23 green & the bridge on #8. All of the bridges on the course are now stronger & wider than before. The support beams under all of the bridges should last for years with the occasional decking being replaced here & there. I attended a Turf Conference in Rochester this past fall. A product named Primo was recognized as the most influential invention in Turf management since the 1950's. Primo is a growth retardant that takes top growth energy in the plant and puts it into rooting & horizontal growth. This creates a stronger plant, which needs less water as well as mowing. The results for your golf game is the green speeds will stay faster & longer into the day. For 2007, more Primo will be sprayed. Areas will include: greens, tees, aprons on the entire course, range tees & targets and the front & back nine fairways. Projects on tap for the 2007 season will include tree removal and possible bunker and tee construction. Bunkers that drain poorly will be worked on as well as sand added to thin traps. We purchased a pump this spring to help clear out the traps that the water has no way of draining. Behind #20 green, we are looking at an entrance into that area of Brooklea property to establish a brush dumping area. Due to global warming & more severe storms in the future, a safe area to bring brush from storm damage has to be established. Crossing the highway with brush is too dangerous. We have also purchased new golf cart direction signs as well as a "Goose light". The goose light will be anchored in the middle of the pond between #4 & #6. The light is solar powered and flashes every few seconds scaring the geese from nesting on the islands. Other Golf Courses are raving about the successful "no-geese" results they have experienced. From the Grounds Crew, have a great 2007-golf season. Yours truly, Marlon Gieseler Golf Course Superintendent From the archives The 2006 Season has had some good things & bad in regards to course maintenance. The Bunker on # 18 looks good and opening the new Tee on #15 was positive. Obviously the wind damage from the storm earlier in August was bad. The Crew did a "Great Job" getting the Course cleaned up. A special thanks to Bob Simpson for coming out to help us for 3 days during the cleanup. The Tee on # 14 has been disappointing. We tried to use a sand/peat mix and obviously the material can't be kept wet enough through the dry conditions of this summer. Potential Projects being talked about are the following: Bring in two loads of Top Soil and resume New Tee on # 14 Mounds on # 10 & # 14 being turned into bunkers like # 18 New decking on # 8 and # 23 bridges. During the last week of August # 13, # 16 & # 18 fairways are going to be over-seeded. Yours truly, Marlon Gieseler Golf Course Superintendent
